Interesting you asked, Luke. I wish I had the name of the program and sources for the following, but I only heard it briefly on a TV holiday program. So take this as a caveat, can't confirm it. Maybe others can supply more info.
It's accepted that Black Friday is the day when businesses are in the black not red, which is much nicer than what supposedly the original term came from. The term started about an event in Philadelphia on the day after Thanksgiving. So many shoppers were out that the city was not only congested but filled with dangerous accidents and mayhem. Many people were hurt, who knows if any died. It was named Black Friday (by the police? or in general) because it was a sad, dangerous day. I perked up when I heard this because I used to live there. (This happened LONG ago, who knows when, probably before I as born.) But the description was only brief.
